Shirley Baptist Church is a thriving, contemporary evangelical church, with an emphasis on Scripture, faith and mission, working out its purpose in the power of the Holy Spirit. The church’s strapline is ‘Passion for God, Compassion for People’ and this simple phrase gives a fundamental direction for the life of the church.
Worship and prayer are central to everything, and there is a deep desire to understand and interpret the Bible, to develop a meaningful prayer life and to celebrate together all that God has done through Jesus Christ. The baptistry is close to the centre of the building, and is a wonderful visual reminder of the new life which is given to everyone who believes in Jesus. New Christians are baptised by full immersion under the water, and this is a very powerful expression of faith.
Flowing out of a deep passion for God is a wide compassion for people. The church expresses its care in the community in many different ways, some of which are described on this website. There are programmes for infants, children, young people, and adults of all ages. Some of these are within the buildings and others are elsewhere in the community.
The church is affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is a member of the Evangelical Alliance. It also works in partnership with other local churches through Shirley Churches Together.
