The place to talk about your concerns and receive help and support over a crisis pregnancy, a past abortion, relationship problems or parenting difficulties. Occasional workshops are run for individuals recovering from separation or divorce and clubs for children ages 7 to 11 who are suffering from loss and grief.
The centre was established in 1998 by Shirley Baptist Church and other local churches. It is a registered charity and is affiliated to CARE Confidential, which is part of a national Christian charity that oversees this and 150 other centres including 2 in Birmingham. All advisers receive training supervised and accredied by CARE Confidential.
Free pregnancy tests with immediate results are available with an opportunity for clients to talk about concerns. A service called “TeenContact” is also provided for teenagers offering free Chlamydia testing and an opportunity to discuss relationships and lifestyle issues. Specific medical advice is not given and, upon a positive pregnancy or Chlamydia test at the centre, the client is referred to her GP. Often other issues arise from an enquiry, some of which can be supported in-house whilst others can usually be referred locally through a network of providers.
The centre is conveniently located at 144A Stratford Road, Shirley, B90 3BB, which is situated behind Shirley Baptist Church. There is direct access from the pathway to the right of the church. It is clearly signed, is on the A34 road, close to many bus routes including 4 and 6. Ample free car parking is available nearby. Provision is made for disabled clients.
TeenContact operates from The Bridge (Solihull Christian Fellowship) in Stratford Road by Shirley Park entrance and can be accessed on 0121 745 8472 or 0121 744 9235.
